You don't need to own a horse to join our horse program! This group is open to all youth interested in learning more about horses through hands-on activities and friendly competitions. We plan to meet about twice a month for study sessions or field trips, covering a variety of topics in equine science. The program is designed to prepare and motivate members for optional participation in 4-H Hippology, Horse Bowl, and Horse Judging competitions. There are endless ways that we interact with our horses. We’ll cover some of the major categories within the English, western, rodeo, and driving disciplines. Participants will learn key terms, basic rules, and what makes each discipline unique, with an emphasis on the information they’re likely to see in competitions. This workshop helps youth turn their business idea into an action plan. Youth will create a realistic production schedule to reach their inventory goal by market day, including weekly targets, supply planning, and a back-up plan for common challenges (running out of supplies, losing a week to activities, etc.). We’ll use fun, interactive activities to practice pitching their plan, problem-solving “what if” scenarios, and learning from each other’s ideas. Youth will complete interactive planning activities and receive a short 1-on-2 check-in with staff for feedback and next steps. Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour of the SUNY Morrisville Equine Rehabilitation Center, one of the few specialized equine rehabilitation facilities in the Northeast. This unique opportunity will give 4-H members an inside look at how modern rehabilitation therapies support equine health, soundness, and recovery from injury. Depending on the patients scheduled on the day of our visit, 4-H’ers may observe a variety of advanced rehabilitation tools in action, such as the underwater treadmill, equine swimming programs, vibration plate therapy, MagnaWave (pulsed electromagnetic field therapy), and other specialized equipment. This tour is ideal for youth interested in equine science, veterinary medicine, or horse management, and it offers valuable real-world insight into careers and technologies used in the equine industry today.
