Since 2021 the Hickories Circuit has called the Broome County Fair Grounds in Whitney Point, NY home. The 4-day dog show is hosted by the Susque-Nango Kennel Club (SNKC) and the Tioga County Kennel Club (TCKC). Over 500 dogs representing over 100 different breeds enter the show every year.
On Saturday, August 16th, come see a real-life dog show right in your back yard! This tour is for all 4-H members, not just those who participate in the dog program. This is your chance to get a behind the scenes look at a dog show. 4-H families will get to see dogs competing while learning about the people who keep the show running behind the scenes.
Tour Plan:
● Families will meet at the Entertainment building located on the south end of the fairgrounds. This building contains the club table, superintendent, and AKC rep.
○ Kids will discuss dog show etiquette such as how to approach a dog, when it’s appropriate to approach a dog and how to respect a dog who is actively working.
○ We will discuss the role of the hosting club. Kids will also get to see up close the Best in Show ribbon.
○ We will walk over to the superintendent and discuss the job of the superintendent (taking entries, organizing paperwork, reporting results to AKC, ect.) All kids will get a copy of the judging program for the day.
○ We will discuss the role of the AKC Representative.
● We will then walk over to the Franklin Building which contains the show photographer
and Ring 5-6.
○ We will discuss the role of the show photographer.
○ We will discuss the different breeds that are in rings 5-6, as well as ring procedure and what the judges are looking for.
● The next stop will be to the outdoor rings under the tent, rings 1-4.
○ We will again discuss the different breeds that are in the ring, ring procedure and the role of the judge and the ring steward.
○ Kids will also get a chance to check out the grooming tent. We will discuss what goes into getting a dog ready for the show ring.
○ Other topics we will cover include owner handlers versus professional handlers, how a dog obtains their championship, and the overall structure of how a dog goes from breed to best in show.
● We will then walk to the north end of the fairgrounds to check out the Obedience and Rally rings.
○ Before the kids enter the buildings we will discuss why it is important to be quiet and respectful of the dogs who are working in obedience and rally. At this point the Rally/Obed rings may be done for the day or on lunch break.
