In the United States almost 40% of farmland is leased. According to data from the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York's average cash rental rate is $77 per acre. Leasing land offers an affordable land access option for farmers when compared to purchasing land. A fair, equitable, and secure lease is important for the success of the lease and the relationship between the farmer and landowner.
Farmland for a New Generation New York helps farmers seeking land and landowners wanting to keep their land in farming. Farmland for a New Generation New York supports a network of Regional Navigators, or partner organizations with dedicated staff, that provides training and on-the-ground customized support for farmers and landowners in regions across New York.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County, along with agricultural service providers across NYS, are engaging in efforts to encourage continued agricultural use of productive land in the region.
