Who: All Broome County 4-H Members 8+

When: January 22nd

Time: 5:30-7:00 pm

Join an expert from Keystone Mills for a hands-on, practical class that makes livestock feeds easy to understand. We’ll look at feed tags, compare common ingredients, and walk through how to match a ration to your animal’s age, stage, and workload. Expect demonstrations, samples you can see and handle, and plenty of time for Q&A.

You’ll learn:

  • How to read a feed label (ingredients, meds/additives)
  • Balancing basics for beef, dairy, goats, sheep, pigs, poultry
  • Forage first: hay quality, testing, and why fiber matters
  • Minerals & vitamins: salt, calcium/phosphorus, selenium, copper cautions
  • Real-world rations: starter vs. grower vs. finisher; show vs. breeding needs
  • How to avoid common mistakes (overfeeding energy, underfeeding protein, mixing brands)

Perfect for:

  • Youth planning to show livestock this season
  • New families building confidence with feed choices
  • 4-H families looking for solid, take-home guidance

Bring:

  • A notebook and questions
  • A Feed tag from home if you have questions about it.

Note for auction participants: This session counts as one educational program toward the requirement for the Livestock Auction at the fair (participants must be enrolled in the Livestock Program and complete two approved educational programs).
