Re-Wilding Ash Trees: MaMA Project Field Session

  • Friday, June 28, 2024, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

The Monitoring and Managing Ash (MaMA) project, funded through the Ecological Research Institute (ERI), aims to re-wild ash trees through a cross-breeding program that utilizes local ash trees with a natural resistance to the invasive Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). The project relies heavily on citizen science (i.e. participation by members from the general public) to collect data on potential candidate trees. During this field session, a demonstration monitoring plot will be established and participants will become familiar with the data collection methods and software used by the project while in the field. Any parties interested in taking an active role in the citizen science portion of this project are HIGHLY encouraged to attend in order to get hands on experience with the data collection processes under the guidance of those with experience doing so.

When: Friday, June 28th 5:30pm-8:30pm

Where: Waterman Conservation Education Center (403 Hilton Rd., Apalachin, NY 13732)

The MaMA project houses their data collection projects on Anecdata, a platform used for citizen science projects. Please download Anecdata to your device(s) before arriving to WCEC for the field session. There are also physical forms provided by the MaMA project for those who would prefer to collect data by hand. We will have copies of them available at the field session.

Rain-date(s): If the field session has to be rescheduled due to poor weather, registered participants will be notified no later than six hours prior to the start time. Once registered please keep an eye on your email inboxes for program reminders and updates such as these. We plan to be out in the field unless there is a threat of thunder storms.

The content in this field session will be geared towards an adult audience. Youth are welcome to attend but must be accompanied by an adult, however please be advised that we will be collecting real data for the MaMA project during this session so it must be as accurate as possible.

Presented in partnership with ERI, the MaMA project, and Waterman Conservation Education Center.
