This informational session will go over the scope and goals of the Monitoring and Managing Ash (MaMA) project in the Southern Tier region of New York. To summarize briefly, the project aims to monitor and manage stands of ash trees with the hope of identify Lingering Ash trees (i.e. ash trees with some level of natural resistance to the invasive Emerald Ash Borer). Parts of these Lingering Ash trees can then be collected for a cross breeding project that produces ash trees which are resistant to the invasive pest but still retain local genetics.
This project relies heavily on citizen science and participation from the general public to monitor stands of ash trees, collect data, and identify potential candidate trees for the breeding program. Join us to learn how YOU can become a part of this project!
