Growing Organic Garlic for Profit: Hear from the Experts & Gain Hands-on Experience!

  • Saturday, July 8, 2017, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Learning the production of garlic requires specific knowledge of the plant and the human interventions it requires for it’s cultivation. Unlike many horticultural plants where a seed is planted and a crop is harvested, garlic has specific labor demands. This class will be a BASIC introductory sharing of information.

We will discuss all aspects of the plant and then walk through the life cycle from fall field preparation to post harvest considerations in July. We’ll have additional printed information available and lots of time for questions and discussion. In the afternoon, we’ll visit Gillie Brook Farm to see what this stinky stuff looks like and get our hands dirty helping finish the harvest and dissect some fat juicy bulbs!

Presenter: David Stern has been farming for 45 years at Rose Valley Farm in Rose Valley, NY with his work/life partner Janet Cawley. They wholesale market a large selection of fruits, vegetables and nuts. David was a founder of the organic movement and Rose Valley Farm has been certified organic since 1985. He is also responsible for founding the Garlic Seed Foundation (garlicseedfoundation.info) and for 30 years the director, researcher and lecturer. He has grown and eaten many tons of garlic.

Farmer: Rob Nogash, left a 30 year career as an engineer in Syracuse to farm garlic! Today, Gillie Brook Farm is a certified organic operation growing a large selection of crops and marketing at the Syracuse Regional Market, Health Food stores and farm market. He also markets garlic online.

Priority for spots will be given to veterans in the Southern Tier, but others are welcome to attend as space permits.
