Gardening Classes and Hands On Workshops

Indoor Seed Starting Workshop 

Saturday, March 23rd
1 to 3p.m.
Broome County Public Library

Learn all you need to know to start your own garden vegetable or flower plants from seed indoors. Seed starting mixes, lighting needs and after-care of seedlings will be explained. Gain hands-on experience as you sow seeds in a six-pack container. (Seeds will be provided or you can bring your own.) Class size is limited so pre-registration is required.  Held in the Exhibit Room at BCPL.

Pruning Trees and Shrubs Workshop

Cutler Botanic Garden Grounds

In coordination with VINES, work with Master Gardeners in CBG learning proper techniques pruning trees and shrubs. Learn how, why and when to prune, proper tools, tool maintenance, etc. We will be going out to the gardens for the second hour so please dress for the weather.(In the event of rain/snow cancellation, class will not be rescheduled).  Cost is free, but donations appreciated. Please bring a pair of garden gloves and hand pruners. Class size is limited so pre-registration is required. Planning the Vegetable Garden

Season Extension/Hoop Bending Workshop

Cutler Botanic Garden grounds

In coordination with VINES, you can easily add 2 weeks to the start and end of the growing season by the use of low tunnels, frost blankets with supports. Construct you own 4 ft. low tunnel hoops and learn tips and techniques from Master Gardener Volunteers at Cutler Botanic Garden.  Hoop material, ½ inch EMT, will be provided. Please dress for the weather and bring a pair of garden gloves. The cost of this class is $21 per household and includes 3 hoops. Each hoop is 4 ft. wide, 4 ft. tall. Additional hoops will be available at the class for $7 each. Diseases in the Food Garden

Gardening IS for the Birds

In cooperation with VINES, explore the importance of using native plants and providing the basic needs for birds. This program provides information on how to garden for birds along with examples of specific flowers, shrubs, and trees that work well in our area and are helpful for our indigenous bird species. Cost is free, but donations appreciated.
