Moth Night 2024

Broome County boasts a large variety of moths and butterflies that fill many ecological roles and come in a multitude of colors and patterns. These fantastic critters can be quite elusive, but with the proper skillset can be easier to find than you may imagine.

Join CCE Broome and the Naturalists' Club of Broome County to partake in a Moth Night to learn about our local moths and butterflies, as well as what to look for when searching for them and how to attract different species to your own outdoor spaces. We will also be releasing hand-raised Cecropia moths, in addition to attracting the beautiful Rosy Maple moth, among other species. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome.

A very special thank you to local moth and butterfly expert, Colleen Wolpert, for leading this event and to CVSP for providing access to their facilities.

Where: Chenango Valley State Park, Pine Plains Pavilion

When: Thursday, May 30th 8:30pm-11:00pm

We are proud to offer this program free of charge. Any youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION (From Colleen):

Do not use any insect repellant! This will keep the moths away. Any product containing Permethrin will kill moths!

Wear dark colors and long sleeves. Tuck your pants into your socks.

Tie back long hair or wear a hat. The moths (and other critters) like to get tangled in loose hair.

We are going to be using lights to attract the moths. Some of these lights get very HOT. Please be careful around these.

Rain-date(s): If the program has to be rescheduled due to poor weather registered participants will be notified no later than six hours prior to the program. If scheduling allows, the program will be rescheduled to a later date which will be communicated on an as-need basis. Once registered please keep an eye on your email inboxes for program reminders and updates such as these.

No Call/No Show policy: In order to mitigate no call/no show participants at our programs, if you do register and no call/no show on the day of the event you will not be given priority at future events. In other words, if space is limited at future events other participants will be given preference if spots are filling up. Our programs are in high demand and this is to maintain fairness for all interested community members.

This event is co-hosted with the Naturalists' Club of Broome County.
